The Flu Shot

The Flu Shot Epidemic

With each newsletter we do our best try to provide health information in a positive and insightful manner. So I've got to start this time by saying that some of you will likely not find this article particularly "warm and fuzzy". Consider that "fair warning" and read on at your own risk...

Few things are so effective at aggravating me professionally as the pharmaceutical industry and medical community influencing the health care decisions of patients without telling the entire story. This particular rant will address the issue of the flu shot. You see it advertised on television and throughout the community just like I do. It has become a veritable epidemic in our society and the problem is this: For a significant portion of the population, the flu shot is largely unnecessary and potentially detrimental to our long-term health and wellness. Clearly this a big claim to make, but to understand why I make such a statement I'd ask you to think about the premise for the flu shot, its application and your personal views on health and wellness.

The premise for any type of vaccination sounds great on paper. Patients could be given a magic shot or pill that could provide a given health outcome without side-effects while netting short and long-term health and wellness benefits. Sound good? Of course it does. The problem is that in any avenue of healthcare, chiropractic included, there are no magic secrets to health. If you've heard otherwise, you've been misinformed. It's as simple as that. The real problem comes in the application. In simple terms, each year a particular strain of influenza virus is selected as that "most likely" to be prevalent during that year's "flu season". The problem is that it's all just a guess and the guessers aren't always right.

So I'd ask you to consider that your body comes fully equipped with an immune system capable of responding to bacterial and viral agents such as the influenza virus. It's a system that is working each and every day as we interact with our environment. And our immune systems get stronger by facing natural challenges. A flu shot, even if the guessers get it 100% right, introduces an altered or "killed" virus into the body. This doesn't stimulate the true immune response that simply encountering the flu virus in the environment would have. The result is an immune system that didn't achieve its fullest potential to overcome future challenges.

So you might ask, have I considered that some people have compromised immune systems such as in the case of advanced HIV infection or other terminal disease? Certainly, but cases such as these require special consideration and are not representative of the majority of the population. What about the question of why my primary care physician has not shared these concepts with me? Well at the risk of answering a question with a question, when was the last time that you saw a Pepsi advertising for Coke? Because the chiropractic profession does not deal in drugs or surgery, there is no gain financially or otherwise whether or not a patient chooses to receive a flu shot. Can the medical profession or the pharmaceutical industry say the same? And what about the inconvenience of actually getting the flu? Well, feeling under the weather is certainly not on anyone's list of favorite things to do. However, consider that we are merely talking about "the flu" here. This isn't the plague or some type of bio-warfare. It's the flu! For a huge percentage of the population, you will overcome any and all symptoms in 7-10 days with proper rest and diet while gaining long-term memory cells to prevent and/or minimize future symptoms.

So it all comes down to this: Life and health require proactive maintenance and there is no magic shot or pill to obtain true health. If you take in more calories than your body is able to use for energy, you will gain weight over time. If you do not exercise the muscles necessary to bench press 500 pounds, you will likely not be able to bench press 500 pounds. This isn't rocket science! If you want a healthy life, consider all that you put into your body and what activities you do to proactively maintain your body over a lifetime. There is a journey and pathway to health just as there is a path to sickness and disease.

And most importantly, the good news is that you have a choice for you and your family. If you randomly got a flu shot or a particular vaccine this year because friends, co-workers or employers suggested that you should, you have an amazing opportunity (and perhaps even an obligation) to make a more informed choice next year. And please understand that ultimately your healthcare decisions are exactly that, yours. You have to make decisions for you and your family that are congruent with your philosophy of health. After reading this perhaps you'll choose as you have in the past or just maybe you will make a different choice. The choice is yours and I wish nothing but health for you in all of your healthcare decisions.

Dr. Barry

Tips for a Healthy Back this Summer

Summer time means increased activity and increase stress to your back. Here are some tips to keep your back and spine healthy this summer:

Let Your Legs Do the Work: Warm weather often means increased yard work, cleaning out the garage and various other forms of activity. Taking a moment to think about your posture during tasks such as these is a simple way to help prevent injury. It may be one of those statements you have heard over and over again, but bending and lifting with your legs uses larger muscles to get the job done and spares those smaller (and more easily injured) muscles in your back.

Consider Your Footwear: Individuals who enjoy activities that involved standing, walking or running may benefit from a new pair of running shoes or properly fitted orthotics to balance and support the spine from the ground up. Health issues related to the foot and ankle can often lead to more severe pain in the knee, hip and low back.

Summer Sports Require Stretching: Just like your car needs to be warmed up in the winter before driving, your body need to be warmed up before even the smallest of athletic events. Stretching your muscles by lightly going through the motions you might encounter in your sport can help to improve your performance and prevent injury. You should have a smooth, pain free range of motion during these movements.

By following the above tips you will be on your way to a fun and healthy summer! As always if you would like to prevent problems from occurring, or alleviate pain and discomfort call to make an appointment for an adjustment. Placing ice on sore areas, as well as applying Biofreeze can help reduce inflammation. Consider an orthotic foot scan with Dr. Barry if you are experiencing any discomfort in your feet.

If you have specific questions or concerns regarding your activity level, please ask at your next visit or email Dr. Barry at doctorbarry@SpineSmart.com. Happy Summer!

2007 Patient of the Year!

We are so pleased to announce Abby Johnes as our 2007 Patient of the Year. Abby’s life has truly been changed by chiropractic care. Many times people think that chiropractors can help only adults or people suffering from back and neck pain. Abby’s story shows the true power of chiropractic in helping people of all ages live healthier lives less dependent upon medication.

We were first introduced to Abby by her mother Kasey, who is also a chiropractic patient. Kasey was concerned that for most of Abby’s first 15 months of life she was sick with sinus congestion, chronic cough and recurring ear infections. By the time we had met Abby, she had been put through more diagnostic testing than most of us will undergo in a lifetime. She had multiple chest x-rays performed, testing for cystic fibrosis and allergies, two bronchoscopies and an ear tube surgery. When she started care in our office Abby was also taking Flovent, Singulair, Albuterol, Nasonex and Prevacid in an attempt to treat her condition. All of this and Abby had experienced no significant relief. Dr. Barry told Kasey he would be willing to meet with her and Abby to see if there was anything he could do to help. As you can imagine, by this point Kasey was willing to try anything to get some much needed relief for her daughter.

At Abby’s examination, Dr. Barry found that her cervical and thoracic spine were, in fact, out of proper alignment. Empowered with the proper information and diagnosis, Abby’s transformation began. After her second adjustment, Abby slept through the night for the first time in her life! Her parents and babysitter noticed a significant improvement in her cough. They would first count the number of coughs per day and then per week until they were virtually non-existent.

At her progress examination not only was Abby’s improvement physically noticeable, her nervous system scans showed the same. Below are Abby’s two scans. The one on the left was taken at Abby’s first appointment. The one on the right was taken after the recommended series of chiropractic adjustments.

During the course of Abby’s treatment, there was a period of time when Abby stopped coming in for her regular adjustments. During that time most of her symptoms returned and she was back on steroid treatment. Fortunately, Abby began returned for care and within weeks Abby was back to normal with no cough, no congestion and no medications. And even though Abby’s original symptoms have been reduced to only the occasional cough during increased periods of activity, in order to keep her healthy and prevent symptoms from returning, her parents continue to bring her for regular chiropractic wellness adjustments. The following is from a letter written to Dr. Barry from Abby’s mom:

“We were very touched that you considered Abby to be your Patient of the Year. She has made a wonderful transformation and I only have YOU to thank for that. Her journey through this has been trying and sad because she has gone through so much in her short life. If I had only met you a year earlier! But, I thank you for all you have given BACK to us – some sleep and our happy, beautiful little girl.”

Let Abby’s story be a reminder to all of us that chiropractic does not just help back and neck pain. Chiropractors specialize in treating your nervous system which, when free of interference, controls EVERY function in the body. By properly adjusting the spine and taking pressure off of the nerves our bodies are free to heal and regulate naturally. Because of this chiropractic helps many other symptoms caused by an improperly functioning nervous system such as asthma, carpal tunnel, ear infections, colds, sciatica, headaches and many more. Understanding that chiropractic care can help with these conditions empowers patients to think about natural alternatives before resorting to drugs and surgery.

Chiropractic & Headaches

It is reported that perhaps as many as 28 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Of these individuals, 4.5 million are having multiple headaches each month. All too often many headache sufferers are unsure as to what is causing their headaches and subsequently are left confused about how to properly treat the problem.

It is often confusing because the true cause of headaches can be multi-factorial. The initial event that initiates a headache is often referred to as a "trigger". Identifying those key triggers can often be of significant help in reducing or eliminating headaches. Of course once identified, this does assume that one is willing to take the necessary steps toward prevention. For example, some individuals may notice that changes in sleep patterns leave them more susceptible to increased migraine attacks. Maintaining a healthy sleep schedule of 7-8 hours each night may be all these individuals need to keep their headaches under control. Others may find that stress, high blood pressure, the use of prescription or over-the-counter medications, hormonal imbalances, dehydration, increased caffeine, tobacco or alcohol use, or musculoskeletal injury to be the root cause of their headache symptoms. Less commonly, headaches can be attributed to more severe conditions such brain tumors or aneurysms which would require immediate medical attention.

Chiropractic doctors are specifically interested in those causes of headaches which can be alleviated through either chiropractic adjustments or by helping patients to make healthy and informed lifestyle decisions. Through a comprehensive evaluation by a chiropractor, it can be determined if your case is one that would likely see favorable results through chiropractic and wellness care. Even if they occurred years ago, automobile accidents, sports injuries, or injuries of repetitive nature that can occur at work or at home can leave the spine misaligned in a way that can predispose you for headaches.

If you or someone you know frequently suffers from headaches, I encourage you to have them contact our office at (618) 288-7991 to schedule a complete chiropractic physical examination. If you have someone in mind who perhaps doesn't live in this area, we can also be of assistance in helping them find an excellent chiropractic doctor near their hometown.

Dr. Barry
